The design was launched in 1959 and until 1982 a bronze alloy was used. After that the mint used copper-coated zinc. Striking can vary. The points to check include Lincoln’s beard and hair as well as the tiny marks on Lincoln’s shoulder. On the reverse, there can be light striking on the steps of the Memorial and some of the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, namely IBU and M. The Lincoln cent with Memorial reverse is seldom collected in grades lower than EF-40.
