Mercury, Winged Liberty Silver Dime (1916-1945)

Coin number: MC160
Description: Winged Liberty Silver Dime (1916-1945), Designer - Engraver: Adolph A Weinman, Metal Composition: 90% Silver - 10% Copper, Diameter: 17.9 mm, Mass: 2.5 grams
This new design replaced the Barber design in 1916 and officially designated as the Winged Liberty but in the numismatic world it is more commonly known as the Mercury dime. The reverse features a fasces (a symbol of unity) and an olive branch. The coins remained in circulation until the 1960s when it became common practice to melt down silver coins as their face value became less than their scrap value. Areas of light striking to look for include the center horizontal band on the reverse and possibly the obverse hair, rim, and date.
