Coronet Liberty Head, Matron Early Copper Penny (1816-1839)

Coin number: MC111
Matron Early Copper Penny (1816-1839), Designer - Engraver: Robert Scot, Metal Composition: 100% Copper, Diameter: 28.5 mm, Mass: 10.89 grams
The portraits on these popular coins were done by engraver Christian Gobrecht. The Silly Head and the Booby Head are two of the more interesting examples. Planchet quality is usually good. Coins of the 1830s tend to be lighter in color than earlier ones. The most telling details include the obverse stars, the hair details, and the leaves on the reverse. This type is easily available, with the 1823 coins being the rarest. Mint State coins are scarce with the exception of cents dating 1816 to 1820. Planchet quality and striking sharpness vary, which makes careful selection advisable.
