Two cents, Two Cent Pieces (1864-1873)
Coin number: MC266
Description: Two Cent Pieces (1864-1873), Designer - Engraver: James B Longacre, Metal Composition: 95% Copper - 5% Tin and Zinc, Diameter: 23 mm, Mass: 6.22 grams
This coin came out during the American Civil War. Amidst all the uncertainty, there was a demand for “hard money” as people tended to hoard rather than use these coins for their day-to-day transactions. Large quantities were struck at first, but after 1865 the quantity of two-cent pieces declined. Most coins are quite well struck. Details to check for sharpness include: (on the obverse) WE in the motto, the leaves, and the horizontal shield lines, and on the reverse, the wreath details and the border letters.
