Braided Hair Liberty Head, Early Copper Penny (1839-1857)
Coin number: MC112
Description: Early Copper Penny (1839-1857), Designer - Engraver: Christian Gobrecht, Metal Composition: 100% Copper, Diameter: 28.5 mm, Mass: 10.89 grams
The Braided Hair motif was introduced in 1839 and the design of these coins was loosely based on the 1838 golden eagle. On issues starting from 1843 onwards, Miss Liberty’s head on the obverse and the reverse lettering are both larger. The result is that the earlier coins are more delicate in appearance than the later ones. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find these issues in the higher grades. Sharpness and strike vary, and since grading numbers do not reflect sharpness, there is an opportunity for the shrewd collector. Grades below VF-20 are rarely collected.
