Roosevelt Dimes, Clad Composition (1964-Present)

Coin number: MC162

Description: Clad Composition (1964-Present), Designer - Engraver: John R Sinnock, Metal Composition: 91.67% Copper - 8.33% Nickel, Diameter: 17.9 mm, Mass: 2.27 grams

President Franklin D. Roosevelt had been active in the March of the Dimes fundraising effort during his lifetime. After his death in 1945, the Treasury was quick to create a ten-cent piece in his honor. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Roosevelt while the reverse depicts a torch with two branches on either side, one of oak and one of olive. The points to check for lightness of striking include the leaves and the details of the torch on the reverse. All issues are quite common. Mint State coins in the higher grades generally have a good luster. The Roosevelt dime is seldom collected in grades lower than EF-40.
