Flying Eagle Cent, Flying Eagle Penny (1856-1858)

Coin number: MC113
Description: Flying Eagle Penny (1856-1858), Designer - Engraver: James B Longacre, Metal Composition: 88% Copper - 12% Nickel, Diameter: 19 mm, Mass: 4.67 grams
Large coins were becoming increasingly expensive to produce. During the 1850s the Mint decided to experiment with smaller coins and finally settled on the Flying Eagle design. However, there were problems with striking and the coin was discontinued in 1858. The lightness of strike is most evident at both ends of the eagle on the obverse and on the leaves on the reverse. This is not to say that there aren’t many examples of well struck Flying Eagle cents. In general, the coin is easily available although some varieties are scarce and even rare. Many Mint State coins have been dipped, cleaned or recolored which has disqualified them for consideration by connoisseurs.
