Description: Early Nickels (1866-1883), Designer - Engraver: James B Longacre, Metal Composition: 75% Copper - 25% Nickel, Diameter: 20.5 mm, Mass: 5 grams

The nickel five-cent coin was introduced in 1866 and is still in use today. The coins of 1866 and 1867 have rays between the stars on the obverse. After 1867, the feature was discontinued. Sharpness can sometimes be an issue for the years up to 1876. The points to check are the horizontal shield stripes on the obverse as well as the vertical stripes and leaves. The star centers on the reverse can be weak.
