Coronet Head Gold Eagle, New Style Head No Motto (1839-1866)
Coin number: MC243
Description: New Style Head No Motto (1839-1866), Designer - Engraver: Christian Gobrecht, Metal Composition: 90% Gold - 10% Copper, Diameter: 27 mm, Mass: 16.72 grams
The design on this coin is by Christian Gobrecht and is very similar to the one used on other coinage such as the $2.50 and 5$ coins of the same period. The inscription IN GOD WE TRUST was added as a design feature in 1866. The points to check include the hair and stars on the obverse as well as the eagle’s neck and the left-hand side section of the shield on the reverse. The dentils on both sides should also be checked. As a type, this coin is rarely collected below the VF level. MS coins are rarer than the related half eagles and quarter eagles.
