Liberty Cap Quarter Eagle, Early Gold Coins (1796-1807)
Coin number: MC225
Description: Early Gold Coins (1796-1807), Designer - Engraver: Robert Scot, Metal Composition: 92% Gold - 8% Silver and Copper, Diameter: 20 mm, Mass: 4.37 grams
These coins were not produced in large quantities. The design used for them combines a capped Miss Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle (also used on dollars, half dollars and quarters) on the reverse. There are generally some issues with light striking. The points to check include the hair and stars on the obverse as well as the shield, stars, and clouds on the reverse. The majority of specimens available on the market are in the higher grades, usually EF and AU. The coin as a type is rarely collected below the VF level.
