Coronet Head Gold Double Eagle, Twenty D - With Motto (1866-1876)
Coin number: MC248
Description: Twenty D - With Motto (1866-1876), Designer - Engraver: James B Longacre, Metal Composition: 90% Gold - 10% Copper, Diameter: 34 mm, Mass: 33.44 grams
With the increased availability of gold coming from the Gold Rush, the double eagle became a way of converting precious metal into coinage. The design was made by John Longacre; the obverse is very similar to that of the related eagle and half eagle. The points to check include the stars and hair details of Miss Liberty on the obverse as well as the complex design features on the reverse including the eagle. The dentils on both sides should also be checked. As a type, the coin is rarely collected below the VF level.
