Large Indian Head Dollars, Indian Princess (1856-1889)

Large Indian Head Dollars, Indian Princess (1856-1889)

Coin number: MC224

Description: Indian Princess (1856-1889), Designer - Engraver: James B Longacre, Metal Composition: 90% Gold - 10% Copper, Diameter: 15 mm, Mass: 1.672 grams

This design on this coin is almost identical in design to the Type II gold dollar described above except that the head on the obverse is enlarged. The areas to check for sharpness of striking include the hair of Miss Liberty and the lettering on the obverse as well as the ribbon and the date on the reverse. Coins of this third type did not circulate very widely in their time and are therefore available today in high grades such as EF and above. All issues are collectible but rarely below the VF level.
