Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, With Motto (1908-1933)
Coin number: MC251
Description: With Motto (1908-1933), Designer - Engraver: Augustus Saint Gaudens, Metal Composition: 90% Gold - 10% Copper, Diameter: 34 mm, Mass: 33.44 grams
This design is almost identical to the one used on the MCMVII double eagle and was again made by Saint-Gaudens, except this time the relief has been lowered and the date on the obverse is now no longer a Roman numeral. The IN GOD WE TRUST inscription was added at the bottom of the reverse. The places to check for striking include the bosom of Miss Liberty on the obverse and the feathers and wings of the eagle on the reverse. A lot of high-grade coins are available today but some of them have been overgraded. As a type, the coin rarely attracts collectors’ attention below the VF level.
