Coin number: MC139

Description: Line Type (1913-1938), Designer - Engraver: James Earle Fraser, Metal Composition: 75% Copper - 25% Nickel, Diameter: 21.2 mm, Mass: 5 grams

The design was made by Earle Fraser and was introduced in 1913. The reverse features an authentic portrait of a Native American with three subjects serving as models. There are two types: in Type I, the ground under the bison on the reverse forms a mound. In Type II, the ground is flattened. Most Buffalo nickels are not well struck. Points to check include the center of the coin on the obverse and the fur on the head of the bison on the reverse.
