Jefferson Five Cents, Pre-War Composition (1938-Present)

Coin number: MC142

Description:

Pre-War Composition (1938-Present), Designer - Engraver: Felix Schlag, Metal Composition: 75% Copper - 25% Nickel, Diameter: 21.2 mm, Mass: 5 grams

The Jefferson nickel is a numismatic favorite. The obverse features a portrait of Jefferson and the reverse depicts his home, Monticello. The points to check for striking include the portrait, especially the jaw, on the obverse and the steps of the building on the reverse. Coins of the 1950s and 1960s may have issues due to weak striking. The silver coins of the 1940s are well struck and Mint State coins of these years are particualrly appealing. The Jefferson nickel is seldom collected in grades lower than VF-20.
