Coin number: MC168

Description: Drapery Added to Liberty (1840-1853), Designer - Engraver: Christian Gobrecht, Metal Composition: 90% Silver - 10% Copper, Diameter: 24.3 mm, Mass: 6.68 grams

This type was introduced in 1838. Early issues do not feature drapery at the elbow and have small lettering on the reverse. The drapery was added in 1840 and continued to be a feature of the design. The coin was popular in its time and circulated widely until the 20th century. Details to check for sharpness of strike include the central part of the seated figure on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. The dentils on both sides should be checked as well.
